Attractions in Cornwall

While here visiting the Cornwall Historical Society, you may wish to bring a picnic to eat on a bench at the nearby Village Green. Or, you may wish to take your picnic to the top of Mohawk Mountain, off Route 4 east of the intersection of Routes 4, 43 and 128, from which you can enjoy a view over the local countryside and on into Massachusetts.

The historic Covered Bridge over the Housatonic River is in West Cornwall, at the intersection of Routes 128 and 7. A bench beside the river is another site for a snack or a picnic.

The Sedgwick Memorial and Civil War cannon are mounted near the home of Major General John Sedgwick. These can be seen at the intersection of Cornwall Hollow Road (Route 43) and Hautboy Hill Road, and the stone marking the general’s grave is in the cemetery on the opposite side of the road.

Traditional white New England churches include the United Church of Christ, Congregational, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church located in Cornwall Village near the Historical Society; the North Cornwall Meeting House that stands at the corner of Town Street and Cogswell Road in North Cornwall; and St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church which is tucked under the bridge in Cornwall Bridge on River Road just off Route 7. A map can be obtained from the Historical Society.

There are several cemeteries in Cornwall; a map on this website locates them. The Cornwall Cemetery on Route 4, near the Historical Society, is the site of the gravestone of the Hawaiian Opukahaia, whose attendance at the Cornwall Foreign Mission School and death in Cornwall in 1818 inspired the conversion to Christianity in Hawaii. The site of the Mission School is marked with a plaque near St. Peter’s Church.

For hikers, the Blue Trail winds through Cornwall. The Housatonic River provides fishing and boating opportunities, and there is local skiing and biking.

See the website for the Town of Cornwall, www.cornwallct.org, for the names and locations of shops, farm stands, restaurants, services and businesses.
