Where: Railroad Square in West Cornwall

When: 1844-1870

Gardner was born and grew up in Cornwall.  She published her first book, Stolen Waters, in 1871 at the age of 26. The family had moved from Cornwall to New York to further Gardner’s writing career. After Gardner’s father’s death, she moved with her mother and sister to New Jersey in the late 1870s.

Gardner’s literary successes continued through the turn of the century, with the publication of over ten books during her lifetime. In 1920, at the age of 75, Gardner was still living in New Jersey, and is listed on the census as single, a self-employed author, and living with her sister.  A date of death was not found for Gardner.
