Elizabeth Jillet
(18th Century)

Judgment against Elizabeth Jillet, 1774.
(Collection of Cornwall Historical Society)

Elizabeth Jillet (also spelled Gillette) was sued by Elihu Allen (cousin of Ethan Allen) for reasons that are unknown. It was extremely rare for a woman to be sued at this time: so rare that the words “his” and “he” were pre-printed on the form. The Justice of the Peace who filled out the form hand wrote “her” and “she” to customize it for this case.
