VISIONS AND CONTRADICTIONS
THE FOREIGN MISSION SCHOOL, 1817-1826

The school was founded to teach “heathen” youths to be missionaries to their own people; its short troubled life and wide influence is told in the words of founders, students, and townspeople.

Village walking tour to sites of the marriages of Sara Northrup, daughter of FMS Steward, to John Ridge, Cherokee student; and of Harriett Gold, daughter of Deacon Gold, to Elias Boudinot, Cherokee student.

Saturday, June 26, 4 pm at the UCC in Cornwall, Congregational
on nearby Bolton Hill Road  
“Joy and Peace in Believing: The Rise of Foreign Missions in Small Towns in New England,”a lecture given by the Rev. Richard H. Taylor, Board member of the Congregational Historical Society in Boston and author of books on New England Congregational history.  Sponsored by the UCC. Refreshments.

“The Friendship Book - the Chinese Students’ Experiences and Expectations.Talk and Tea with Karen Sanchez-Eppler, Professor of American Studies and English at Amherst College.

Friday - Sunday, August 13 - 15,
10 am - 4 pm at the Town Hall
Theater Workshop open to all high school students, using the FMS story as the basis for acting techniques and exercises, led by Tom Walker and members of The Living Theater, NYC. Information and registration at CHS and area schools. There is a small fee for fruit and drinks.

The Heathen School: A Story of Hope and Betrayal in the Age of the Early Republic
Talk and Tea with John Demos, Samuel Knight Professor of History at Yale University, on his new book to be published in 2011.

Saturday, October 3, 2 – 3 pm

The Heathen,
a novel in progress. Talk and Tea with Julie Rose, Professor of American Literature and Creative Writing at Vassar College, who will read from her book concerning the marriage of Harriett Gold to Elias Boudinot.
