Renovation and Expansion News
|
The Town of Cornwall received a Small Town Economic Advancement Program grant from the State of Connecticut in October 2006 to be passed to the Cornwall Historical Society for renovation and expansion of the CHS building. This exciting news came a year after the application submission. The amount of the grant will be $250,000, and this is expected to cover the major work of the project. A capital fundraising effort will be needed to complete the work and provide ongoing maintenance. The Society is in the initial phase of setting up committees, visiting other historical societies, and analyzing needs and options. Members express the desire to keep the character of the 1885-built structure and improve the function of the building for exhibit spaces, safe storage of artifacts, a library and research area, and handicapped access. In the next weeks committee members will work on prioritizing wishes and requirements to create a feasible plan for the project. F u t u r e . . . . ? January 2008, and the architectural plans are well developed, the capital campaign is entering its final stages, and the collections of the Society have been packed up safely, listed carefully, and moved to storage for the project period. The 7 Pine Street building is closed, and work is expected to commence in early spring. We have set up an off-site office where we will have our phone and files. We will be glad to receive inquiries, although much of our reference materials will be unavailable for a while. Look for announcements of programs and events sponsored by the CHS at other locations around town. |
